ClariMed's Head of Market Insights, Alper Hulusi, was recently featured in CPHI's "Day in the Life" interview series, offering valuable insights into the critical role market research plays in medical device development.
In the interview, Hulusi discusses his journey from social policy research to medical devices, highlighting how his background in sociology provides a unique perspective when exploring user experiences and unmet needs in healthcare.
"Med devices research is not just about physical devices," Hulusi explains in the interview. "It's everything that surrounds that, whether it's the marketing, the app, the web, the platform itself."
Hulusi shares his passion for fieldwork and direct engagement with users, emphasizing the importance of understanding the lived experiences of patients, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders. He describes how market insights contribute throughout the product development lifecycle—from early concept exploration to pre-launch preparation.
The interview also touches on the challenges of the role, including mastering complex device systems, managing intensive research sessions, and ensuring diverse representation in research participants.
When asked about his approach to inclusive research, Hulusi notes, "We need to hear the voice of the user, to understand their lives, and the challenges. I don't think you can do that sufficiently from the comfort of a viewing facility or the other side of the laptop or phone."
