Chadds Ford, PA – September 6, 2024 — ClariMed, Inc., a global leader in human-centered medical device development and regulatory services, is proud to announce that Aarti Swaminathan, Sr. Human Factors Consultant, Manager, has been selected as the 2024 recipient of the Robert L. Wears Early Career Award (Practitioner Track) by the Health Care Technical Group (HCTG) of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES).

This esteemed award, honoring the legacy of Dr. Robert L. Wears, recognizes outstanding early-career professionals who have made significant contributions to human factors and ergonomics in healthcare within six years of completing their terminal degree.

Swaminathan's work has significantly impacted public health, particularly in the field of medical diagnostics. Her contributions have been instrumental in the successful FDA approval or emergency use authorization of 23 different diagnostic tests currently on the market. Notably, she played a crucial role in validating the usability of the first FDA-approved rapid Ebola test and the first over-the-counter COVID-19 test given emergency use authorization by the FDA in 2020.

"Receiving this award is a tremendous honor," said Swaminathan. "My passion lies in improving the safety and effectiveness of medical devices through human-centered design. I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute to public health, especially during critical times like the COVID-19 pandemic."

Throughout her career, Swaminathan has demonstrated a keen ability to identify and address usability issues in medical devices. Her work has led to the identification of numerous use errors and difficulties in diagnostic test workflows, resulting in significant improvements to product safety and effectiveness. For example, her efforts on a COVID-19 Test helped identify over 30 different use errors and difficulties, leading to critical improvements before the product's Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA in 2021.

Saher Bishara, Associate Director of Human Factors and Site Lead of the San Jose Office at ClariMed, commented on this achievement:

"Aarti's dedication to advancing human factors in healthcare is truly inspiring. Her extensive background, including significant contributions to infectious disease diagnostics during critical times, brings invaluable perspective to our team at ClariMed. This award is a well-deserved recognition of Aarti's expertise, hard work, and the positive impact she continues to make in our field."

Kelley Kendle, CEO of ClariMed, emphasized the significance of Swaminathan's work:

"Aarti's achievements in diagnostics directly align with ClariMed's commitment to excellence in this critical field. We believe that advanced diagnostics and companion tools are essential for addressing public health challenges in a timely manner and to aid in identifying the best treatments at an individual level. As both infectious diseases and personalized medicine continue to evolve, Aarti's contributions are valuable in advancing our goals and improving patient outcomes."

Swaminathan has been an active member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society since 2023 and has presented her work at numerous industry conferences. Her continued engagement with the field demonstrates her commitment to advancing human factors principles in healthcare and sharing knowledge with peers.
